Some of our managed networks may require you to disable the built-in private Wi-Fi address rotation with your phone's operating system. It msy also go by the name "randomize address", "wi-fi privacy", or "randomize MAC address". Some laptops and tablets may support it as well, and while the interface may look a little different, the process to manage this is relatively the same.
Note that you DO NOT have to do this unless you have been notified by our service desk to do so, or if it is stated on your agreement with us.
What is a private Wi-Fi address?
A private Wi-Fi address is a new feature in mobile operating systems that allows for device to more or less "mask" their device's hardware addresses between networks, making tracking the device between different networks more difficult for those that may want to track this information for monetary purposes.
Why would I need to disable this?
Some of our networks may be more stringint in their operations than others, such as by using a MAC address whitelist rather than trying to block anyone that may be trying to join. Depending on the situation, we may ask that in order for you to use our network that you disable this feature for the network. We want to be clear: we will NEVER disclose this information to anyone outside of our trusted third-parties (this ONLY applies to hardware and/or software of theirs that may be in use at that location. For example, a location may have a Ubiquiti router and access points, and an OPNsense firewall. These networking devices will be the only ones that this information is disclosed to as that is required in order to join the network).
How do I disable this?
The steps vary based on operating system, but the general steps are the same. Operating system-specific instructions are linked below.
